Creating a Cozy Space

Beth recently wrote to me in regards to her living and dining rooms:

I was looking at your blog and love what you have done for others!  We bought a house a couple of months ago and are just now starting to think about decorating. We really don't know what we want to do, other than add some area rugs, buy some more furniture and new lighting b/c it seems really dark.  We tend to lean towards softer, more neutral colors (tans, browns, blues, greens), and not so much bright colors.

We are painting our walls this weekend - the color is Valspar Universal Umber.  It's a darker tan color.  All of the trim and doors downstairs will be painted white.

On the furniture, we are keeping our existing sectional.  We just bought the Amaya dining set from World Market (no bench- all chairs), and want to replace the lighting in the dining room and also the ceiling fans in the living room with nicer ones.  We also plan to buy area rugs for the dining and living room, some sort of storage bench or something to go along the stairway wall and new living room tables (coffee table, end tables).  Here are the coffee tables/end tables that we were considering.  We really like the clean lines of the coffee table, although I wish it offered some storage so I'm not 100% sold on it yet

On the fireplace, we don't plan to paint the bricks b/c they have a lot of character.  They came from small houses around the area where we live and there is a lot of wording stamped and history tied to them from the post civil war era.

Overall, we want a cozy space that is comfortable and also stylish at the same time.  We like modern, clean lines but can also be a bit traditional as well.

Here are photos of the current space:

And here is Beth's idea board with her paint color, furniture choices, and a few finishing touches:

I also think something like this log holder would look great next to the fireplace:

A painting to the left of the fireplace would really help to balance out the window:

And finally a new TV stand:

Good luck with your decorating, Beth!
